TIM supports the Valeria Solesin Award, the initiative - now in its seventh year - that rewards “the best Master’s theses on issues regarding female talent as a determining factor in the development of the economy, ethics and meritocracy in the country”.
Dedicated to the memory of Valeria Solesin, an Italian researcher at the Sorbonne in Paris who tragically died in November 2015 during the massacre at the Bataclan theatre, this award was inspired by the research that Valeria herself was conducting and by countless other research projects that demonstrate the economic and social importance of women’s participation in the world of work.
Gender equality is a central issue for TIM, which aims to play its part in supporting cultural and social change. According to the World Economic Forum’s 'Global Gender Gap Report 2023', it will take another 132 years for the gender gap to be bridged, which is why it is important that everyone is committed to this goal for it to be reached much sooner. Because equality cannot wait.
For the 2013 edition of the Valeria Solesin Award, TIM presented a special award dedicated to the best STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subject thesis. A choice driven by the fact that among the many stereotypes that affect the gender gap is that scientific subjects are a man’s field.
The winner of the TIM award was Gabriella Saveriano, a graduate in History of Educational Processes from the University of Foggia, whose thesis “Gender Differences at School and in the Labour Market” analysed precisely how gender stereotypes still affect education and work today, so much so that they affect women’s choices and personal and professional development prospects.
Congratulations to Gabriella and all the other winners of this seventh edition.
In addition to the Valeria Solesin Award, TIM also supports Ingenio al Femminile (Genius Women), the award for the best thesis among all engineering degree courses on the theme of “Engineering for People” - i.e. sustainability, ecological transition and circular economy - and participates in meeting and recruiting events such as STEM Girls and WomenHack.
