TIM and Qualcomm Enter Agreement on Business Innovation and 5G

TIM and Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, have signed a wide scope Business Innovation co-operation agreement. The two companies have had an ongoing relationship, working on several initiatives and activities on 5G, as well as backing the digital transformation in Italy and Brazil.

Throughout this new co-operation, Qualcomm Technologies and TIM aim to share a strategic vision on business development and advanced services enabled by new technologies, specifically 5G, and testing innovative solutions to speed up commercial roll out.

The agreement will develop along three main themes:

  • use cases for advanced mobile services, with special regard to the prospects enabled by 5G technology and to IoT related services
  • innovative services based on Advanced Analytics leveraging increased data from 5G enabled devices, networks, applications and services
  • innovative products both for mobile and landline

“Qualcomm Technologies has had a long-standing relationship with TIM and we are pleased to have signed this agreement which will accelerate the deployment of 5G NR. Qualcomm Technologies plans to supply mobile test devices, based on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G modem, for both sub-6 GHz and mmW elements of the 5G NR trial as well as working with TIM on a broad range of innovative deployments including LTE-A, IOT LTE and Wi-Fi,” said Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm Incorporated.

5G is set to change the global mobile landscape and is expected to satisfy consumer demand for ultra-broadband connectivity and enable a full and pervasive evolution of Internet of Things apps and solutions, for public and workplace safety, healthcare, Cloud Robotics, and numerous Industry 4.0 use cases.

TIM and Qualcomm Technologies are planning a 5G trial in the 2nd half of 2018 to demonstrate features and measure performance for the 5G NR (New Radio) technology.
