Telecom Italia: Special Partner of the Postal and Communications Police in the Fight against Online Pedophiles

01/29/2007 - 12:00 PM

Italy’s Centro Nazionale per il contrasto alla Pedopornografia sulla Rete Internet (National Centre for Combating Child Pornography on the Internet), established pursuant to Law no. 38 of February 2006, is being run by the Postal and Communications Police as Italy’s national body for combating the distribution of child pornography over online networks.
The General Director of the Roads, Railways and Communications Police and of State Police Special Forces, Prefect Luciano Rosini, and the Head of Group Information Technology at Telecom Italia S.p.A., Mr. Marco Forneris, signed an agreement this morning at the Department of Public Security’s “Tuscolano” investigations offices, for Telecom Italia to supply hardware, software and high-performance connectivity to the Postal and Communications Police.
The newly-established National Centre will be responsible for monitoring the internet in order to black out access from Italy to child pornography sites, for tracking the for-payment market in images depicting sexually-abused minors, and for serving as a collection point for information gathered from a variety of institutions, internet providers, non-governmental organizations and citizens.
Telecom Italia S.p.A.’s highly-specialized technology leverages the most advanced communications channels available to enable the National Centre to provide investigations and intelligence assistance to further international police co-operation.
This agreement serves to boost public security, and marks the start of a new era of collaboration between the Italian police and a private sector communications company, under the terms of in a highly-advanced partnership arrangement.
