In a time span of just eight months, the Italian municipalities that have benefited from TIM’s work to expand ultrabroadband coverage and allow an increasing number of households and businesses to access a fast Internet service have risen to about 3,000.
October also saw the company continue its commitment to extending optical fibre in Italy thanks to cabling work carried out in 283 municipalities across the country, thereby providing a concrete and immediate response to the need for connectivity above all in “white areas” of the country to allow an ever-greater number of citizens to engage in smart working and distance learning.
TIM confirms the aim of closing the digital divide in Italy by 2021, extending the possibility of remote working and studying, accessing high-speed navigation and using TV and entertainment services to everyone.
Thanks to the sharp acceleration in infrastructure rollout accomplished since the start of the emergency phase up until now, TIM’s ultrabroadband services are currently available in over 4,800 Italian municipalities for the benefit of citizens, businesses and public administration.
TIM will also continue to intensify its cabling programs in the coming months in order to bring fibre to 90% of households that use the fixed network by December 2020, concentrating its efforts mainly in rural or sparsely populated areas of the country.
In particular, by the end of the year, over 5,000 municipalities will have access to ultrabroadband, with the aim of enabling around 75% of households in “white areas” that use a fixed network to benefit from digital technology.
To ensure ultrabroadband connections in municipalities that do not yet have access to fibre, TIM has confirmed its commitment also thanks to the use of FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) technology which employs a hybrid system of cable and wireless connections to offer connectivity services via ultrabroadband.
The plan to accelerate the rollout of network infrastructure is proceeding in parallel with the Group’s commitment to spread digital culture: alongside 30 partners of excellence, TIM promotes the development of digital skills through the Operazione Risorgimento Digitale programme with the aim of bridging the cultural digital divide in society.
