The TIM Temporary Store at Expo was inaugurated today, a multipurpose space which joins the new Samsung-TIM Auditorium to offer and inform visitors of the Universal Exposition about innovative technological services and solutions.
With the official opening to the public of its spaces within the universal exhibition, TIM confirms its contribution to the project in which it has been a leading player, first amongst all Italian companies, alongside Expo 2015, and which has enabled the completion of the first Italian Digital Smart City. With an investment of more than 43 million, including economic contributions, goods and services, TIM, the first company to be chosen as “Official Global Partner” of Expo 2015 and the only one in the connectivity and integrated services sector, has provided the entire exhibition area with advanced fixed, mobile and IT network infrastructure, supplying the latest technological solutions, managing operations and maintenance and delivering connectivity services for voice and data traffic.
In particular, TIM has ensured coverage of the exhibition site with the latest generation of ultrabroadband fixed and mobile connections by laying over 300 km of fibre optics and installing six 4G LTE macro and 12 micro antennas, supplying connectivity for more than 100 buildings. TIM also enables and manages WI-FI connections completely based on Cisco technology and architecture and provides a portal, giving simple and intuitive access to the service.
Thanks to its data centers, TIM has allowed the event to be managed completely using cloud technologies, providing the company and its partner businesses with over 450 virtual and physical servers, 100 terabytes of storage and more than 90 applications and web sites.
TIM has also implemented the technological platform that is the cornerstone of the Centrale Command
and Control Centre (EC3) on via Drago, the heart of the Expo 2015 Smart City. Based on an innovative approach to integrating all the technologies and correlating the information processed with a Big Data logic, the platform allows Expo Milano 2015 to manage the control room and to coordinate and track all technological, logistical and public safety processes during the event. TIM’s commitment to the creation of a completely “digital” event also includes a proposal of innovative services for visitors. TheTIM2go tablet sharing system is particularly appreciated, allowing the visitor to rent the latest new generation Samsung tablet to navigate freely in 4G, access exclusive and free ondemand video content, share their experiences with their contacts and other visitors, as well as using the inclusive cloud space to create their own personal “memory” of the visit.

“Expo 2015 confirms itself as an important “digital” and “social” event: the richness of videos, installations and apps is a continuous stimulus for visitors to share their experiences and innovative technological suggestions with their contacts“, said Simone Battiferri, Head of Business Department at Telecom Italia. “In the month of May alone, on the TIM mobile network, just in the exposition area, we recorded a daily average of 95,000 calls and more than 530 GB of data traffic, a significant increase even compared to the extremely busy inauguration day”. “As an Official Global Partner of Expo Milano 2015, we have made our best technology available in order to contribute to the success of the most important Italian event of the year, enriching and making all visitors’ experiences even more digital. Today we are pleased to inaugurate the Auditorium alongside TIM, which will be a space for events pertaining not just to the two companies but also to third parties, a real incubator of ideas. Our technologies, when they travel on reliable, powerful networks, allow unforgettable experiences and revolutionise not only the way of communicating and informing but also of developing important activities such as teaching", said Mario Levratto, Head of Marketing & External Relations, Samsung Electronics Italia. “We are really happy with the projects that Telecom Italia has set up as an Official Global Partner of the event - explained the General Manager of the 'Event & Entertainment’ Division, Piero Galli -. The technological solutions that Telecom, alongside our other partners, such as Samsung, has developed mean that we are enabling millions of people to live an all-round experience of the world exhibition. The digital and social experience proposed, also through the TIM2Go tablet sharing initiative, efficiently rounds off a visit to the exhibition site”. The new generation TIM concept store was also explained during the meeting. The project aims to strengthen the relationship with customers and introduce them to an exhibition area which enhances the products and services offered, increasing the customer experience. In-store, modules will be prepared to present solutions dedicated to entertainment and digital life, which, through the use of ultra-broadband connections, devices, apps and home automation systems, will satisfy the needs of daily life according to the new digital models. The TIM Temporary Store at the Expo represents an authentic technological showcase, which extends for 220 square metres and currently holds, in a dedicated area, a section of Make in Italy – The Exhibition. The store adjoins the Samsung–TIM Auditorium which, with 110 seats in 160 square meters and a further meeting room, can be used to host presentations, conventions, cultural events and meetings on food, sustainability and technology. Participating in the inauguration were Piero Galli, General Manager of “Event & Entertainment” Division, Expo 2015, Simone Battiferri, Head of Business Department, Telecom Italia, , Stefano De Angelis, Head of Consumer Department, Telecom Italia, Mario Levratto, Head of Marketing & External Relations, Samsung Electronics Italia, Alessandro Francolini, Vice President Sales Director, Ericsson and Andrea Costa, Telecom Italia Expo 2015 Project Manager.
