TIM's commitment to the population of Emilia-Romagna affected by the flood, for whom the Group expresses its full support, continues unabated. The company is involved in the Operational Committee of the Italian Civil Protection Department permanently set up and has operated from the start in close contact with national and local institutions. Since last week, a task force has been operating in the field with over 900 company technicians and support personnel from external companies committed to restoring the full functionality of the telephone network and internet connections in the area.
Thanks to the intense work done to check the damaged infrastructure, to date the mobile network has been reactivated in almost all the flooded areas. As for the fixed network, work has been carried out on about 300 transmission devices, which has allowed connections to be restored for over 30,000 customers in the provinces of Bologna, Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna and Rimini. Work in the areas where exchanges are still inaccessible is due to begin in the next few days.
In particular, the 24-hour monitoring of infrastructure performance has allowed prompt action to be taken, based on the priorities set according to the impact on the population and essential services, and following the instructions received from the Civil Protection Department and local authorities. A considerable amount of emergency equipment has been made available: over 500 vehicles, 70 equipped vans and 20 vehicles equipped with radio stations and mobile exchanges that use emergency electric generators. Where landslides have damaged the fibre optic cables, preventing access to emergency vehicles, the work areas had to be reached by helicopter. TIM has also activated radio links to overcome situations of complete isolation, such as in the valleys of the Romagna hinterland, where landslides have completely destroyed fibre optic cables, making it impossible to reconstruct the damaged sections.
The Group has already made available free GB of data traffic for TIM and Kena customers. The company is preparing further actions to protect the customers involved, as has already happened in the past for other extraordinary events in the country. The 187, 191, 119 and 181 support services are available for further information.
