TIM and Google Cloud have announced the launch of the first smart mobility platform based on 5G edge cloud technology in Italy, which was created by integrating their technologies.
The public administration, companies, institutions, and start-ups will be able to take advantage of the most advanced technologies to make our cities and urban mobility smarter and more sustainable. The new platform makes it possible to develop ultra-secure, high-performance connectivity solutions, even in complex situations. The main applications that will result from this are for connected cars, self-driving vehicles, and intelligent transport. Thanks to the integration of the Google Distributed Cloud Virtual software with TIM's cloud infrastructure and 5G mobile network, connections will ensure the best performance while meeting the highest security and privacy standards.
To test its functionality and performance in smart city systems, TIM has made its 5G network available in Bologna and Modena, which will allow MASA (Modena Automotive Smart Area) to field test it, with the help of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
This project is part of the activities of TIM Enterprise — the Group's new business unit dedicated to companies and the public administration — which has developed and offers TIM Urban Genius for smart city development, the virtual 'control room' that lets local authorities manage urban areas in real time, already successfully adopted in several Italian cities.
