European digital innovation was the protagonist at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona with two presentations dedicated to the IPCEI-CIS project, one at the Telefonica booth (on March 3rd) and the other at the Deutsche Telekom stand (on March 4th). Roberto Procopio, Head of Technology Innovation at TIM, spoke with colleagues Cristina Santana and Ana Lucía Vilchez Parra (Telefonica), and Lara Grohe (Deutsche Telekom), in charge of the IPCEI-CIS/8ra projects in Spain and Germany, and together they offered an in-depth overview of the project, focusing on the crucial challenges of the federation of edge cloud services and the interoperability of platforms in European countries.
During the presentation, moreover, wide space was given to the 8ra initiative (pronounced “Ora”) funded by the European Community within the IPCEI program that concretely implements the multi-supplier cloud-edge continuum.
The 8ra Initiative is a strategic European endeavor dedicated to establishing a resilient, open and future-proof digital infrastructure through which an interoperable and secure infrastructure is being created, capable of supporting complex and low-latency applications. By connecting providers and users across Europe, the 8ra initiative fosters innovation, strengthens the economy and accelerates the continent's technological leadership. Through its open source approach, it aims to limit vendor lock-in and ensures that all stakeholders, both large companies and small providers of computing resources, can engage, contribute and benefit. This inclusive framework enables European industry to exploit cutting-edge digital technologies and develop an advanced digital ecosystem.
A stronger and more competitive digital EuropeSpeakers at the MWC in Barcelona have highlighted the importance of European collaboration for the development of a globally competitive edge-cloud infrastructure and the IPCEI-CIS project represents a concrete response to this need to collaborate to strengthen European digital sovereignty. Only by fostering open source innovation, interoperability and cross-border cooperation will it be possible to shape the next generation of cloud and edge computing.
Benefits for European citizensThe results of the IPCEI-CIS project will have a direct impact on the daily lives of European citizens in terms of efficiency, sustainability, security and mobility. In addition, artificial intelligence can be used to develop applications that improve the quality of life and the competitiveness of European businesses.
